What is TAKE2?

TAKE2 is Victoria's collective action on climate change. Delivered by Sustainability Victoria, it’s the first state government-led pledge initiative in Australia and one of the most comprehensive pledge programs of its kind in the world.

All Victorians and all organisations with a base in Victoria can make the TAKE2 pledge and take action on climate change. TAKE2 provides guidance and advice to help you or your organisation produce less of the pollution causing climate change. It also promotes the great climate change work being done by Victorian organisations and individuals.

The Victorian Government has committed to a 30 percent cut in the pollution its departments produce (on 2015 levels) by 2020.

For Victoria to achieve its net zero emissions target by 2050, we all need to play our part.

This is the TAKE2 pledge –

"Working together, we pledge to play our part and take action on climate change for Victoria, our country and our planet."

In 2015, 195 nations, including Australia, met in Paris for the United Nations Climate Change Conference and committed to keeping the global temperature rise under two degrees. TAKE2 refers to that two degree target.

Anyone living in Victoria can join TAKE2, as can any organisation, including business, local government, educational institution or community service group.

It is mandatory for all Victorian Government departments to make a TAKE2 pledge and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

For organisations, a profile page is where they can publicly share the great work they are doing, or plan to do to combat climate change. It’s where they can share their pledge, the actions they’re taking and other programs they’re involved with. They can also share images, details of climate change events they’ve held or other climate change stories.

It’s a great way for organisations to get the recognition they deserve for acting on climate change. We also believe it will inspire others to follow their lead.

Absolutely! One of the important aspects of the TAKE2 program is inspiring others to act on climate change. When you set a great example for others some will be inspired to follow your lead and consider signing up to other programs, as well as TAKE2.

Understanding what other climate change activities or programs you’re involved with also helps us get a more accurate picture of how Victoria is progressing towards its 2050 net zero emissions target.

Once you have made the TAKE2 pledge, you will receive an email from us - ‘How to set up your TAKE2 account’ will be in the subject field. Open the email and click on the link to set up your profile page.

We’re happy to resend the email if you need.

Login to your account. Go to the top of the website and click on your name. A drop down menu will appear. Select My Details to change your details. You can also select Change password from the same drop down menu if you want to create a new password or have forgotten your password.

You can select as many climate change actions as you like. Even starting with one is great. Most pledgers will select more. If you’ve never considered reducing your greenhouse gas emissions before, start off with something simple you feel certain you can achieve and then gradually build up to the larger commitments.

It’s a good idea to browse through all of the categories, just so you know what sorts of actions you can take.

No. You can choose actions from all, a few or just one. We suggest browsing through all of them. They may inspire you or your organisation to even bigger and better climate change actions!

While browsing through the categories you may see some actions are repeated. Sometimes the same action fits into multiple categories. For example, buying products with recycled content could sit in the ‘responsible purchasing’ and ‘waste reduction’ categories. People will browse the categories and actions differently, so we’ve repeated some actions where appropriate.

The Victorian Government will set five-yearly interim emissions targets to help us along our way to the zero net emissions goal for 2050. This first interim target will be set for 30 June 2020.

If you have a major action that you believe you can’t complete until after that date, consider setting a smaller target for before 30 June 2020 on the way to achieving your overall goal. There is a free text box at the bottom of every category, so you can include the details there.

If you have more than 20 people in your organisation, Sustainability Victoria will need to verify your pledge before you can publish your profile page for others to see. This is a precaution to ensure the person pledging on behalf of your organisation has the authority to do so.

The Victorian Government is very committed to creating a clean energy future for Victoria, which is why it has developed TAKE2.

All of us create greenhouse gas emissions, therefore it is everyone’s responsibility to take action on climate change.

The State Government is leading by example. It is mandatory for every Victorian Government department to make the pledge and take action to reduce their emissions.

The Government is also creating five-yearly interim emissions targets to ensure we’re on track to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

A long-term emissions reduction target sends business and the community a clear signal that we need to change to low emissions technologies, goods and services. It will help Victoria capitalise on the economic opportunities that come with moving to a low carbon economy.

Victoria’s Climate Change Framework, which details how Victoria will reach net zero emissions, is being developed and will be released in late 2016.
